Why Image Optimization Matters for Your Website
Every image on your website carries a cost. That cost is measured in file size, and file size translates directly into load time. When a visitor lands on your page, their browser sends a request for every asset it needs to render — your HTML, your CSS, your scripts, and every single image. Large, unoptimized images make that browser wait. And waiting visitors don’t convert.
The problem is rarely visible until it’s already doing damage. An image that looks perfectly fine in your media library might be three times larger than it needs to be, served in an outdated format, and delivered from a server on the other side of the world from your visitor. None of that shows up in your WordPress dashboard. It shows up in your bounce rate.
Format is the biggest lever most sites aren’t pulling. The JPEG and PNG formats that dominated the web for two decades are now largely obsolete for performance purposes. Modern formats like WebP and AVIF deliver the same visual quality at 25–50% smaller file sizes — sometimes more. Google has supported WebP since Chrome 17. Safari added full support in 2020. There is virtually no browser your visitors are using that can’t handle WebP today, yet the majority of WordPress sites are still serving JPEGs by default. Size matters as much as format. Uploading a 4000×3000 pixel photograph and displaying it in a 600px column means your visitor’s browser downloads 24 times more image data than it actually renders on screen. This is one of the most common — and most preventable — performance problems on the web. Properly resizing images to match their display dimensions, and generating responsive image sets for different screen sizes, can cut image payload dramatically without any visible quality loss.
Search engines and image optimization are directly connected. Google’s Core Web Vitals — specifically Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — is frequently determined by the largest image on your page. If that image is slow to load, your LCP score suffers, and your search rankings reflect it. Google has been explicit that page experience is a ranking factor, and image delivery is one of the most actionable parts of page experience you can control. Optimizing your images isn’t just a performance decision — it’s an SEO decision.
A CDN changes where your images come from. Even a perfectly compressed, correctly formatted image takes time to travel from your server to your visitor. If your hosting is in a US data centre and your visitor is in Germany, every image request makes a round trip across the Atlantic. Image optimization is one of the few performance improvements that pays dividends on every page load, for every visitor, indefinitely — because once the images are fixed, they stay fixed.
